Boss: Studies show that it takes 10,000 hours of focused practice to become an expert at anything. According to your resume, you’ve only had enough database experience to be an incompetent menace. Interviewee: How many hours have you practiced doing interviews? Boss: I don’t like where this is headed.

The first time the idea of 10,000 hours to be an expert at something really affected me was during Peace Corps service. Due to the nature of Peace Corps it is commonly referred to as a 24-hour per day job. To reach 10,000 hours at this pace takes less than 16 months. During a Volunteer’s service, it is generally about this time that that projects and work really take off. Maybe it is just a coincidence.
